Gilbert and George: "The Singing Sculpture"
Published in Hardcover by Greenwich Editions (10 May, 1993)
Authors: Carter Ratcliff and Robert Rosenblum
Average review score:

A book about a contemporary art work, but an important one.
Good way to approache to one of the most important and famous works of Gilbert and George. Losing their individuality, two people become an artist and transform their own life into an art work. For The Singing Sculpture, Gilbert & George become metalic living sculptures and repete a sequence of robotical movements and gestures again and again, while a song plays.

This book includes 20 color photographies of the presentation of The Singing Sculpture in Sonnabend Gallery, NY, in 1991 and B&W photos, documents, and reviews of early presentations (1969-1973). Excellent material if you have special interest in the works of Gilbert & George. A book about an art work only, but a very important, relevant, original, and controversial art work.

God in the Balance: Christian Spirituality in Times of Terror
Published in Paperback by Pilgrim Pr (September, 2002)
Author: Carter Heyward
Average review score:

A post-9/11 theological manifesto
"God in the Balance: Christian Spirituality in Times of Terror," by Carter Heyward, is a work of Christian theology that attempts to address spiritual and ethical issues in the wake of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The back cover notes that the author is a theology professor at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The book is very much in the liberal/progressive/radical Christian tradition; Heyward cites such figures as Mohandas K. Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Desmond Tutu. At 110 pages, it's a fairly short book.

Heyward's words are consistently thought-provoking. She discusses many topics: the idea of a just war, the idea of loving one's enemies, the concept of God as mother, etc. She is very critical of the Bush administration and of the "[Jerry] Falwell-[Pat] Robertson version of Christianity." Some of the most compelling material in the book deals with her involvement in a therapeutic horse riding program; ultimately she points toward a theology that more fully embraces the worth of non-human beings. Overall, a compelling work from a consistently interesting theologian.

The Great IQ Challenge

Average review score:

IQ Challenge
This puzzle book offers a intellectual challenge to readers of all ages. These puzzles include a wide variety of challenges to suit almost anyone's abilities. From teasers to cryptograms, it allows everyone to have fun for hours! It also inludes a great system of arranging the order by having stars as difficulty levels, from easy to really dificult, so you can browse through the ones you want to do first. The answers are not in order, so you won't be able to peep at the next answer while looking at the previous one. All in all, it's a great book and a great way to test out your mental skills!

The Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935
Published in Hardcover by History House Press (August, 2002)
Author: T. Keister Greer
Average review score:

Moonshine is a good read
The Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935 is an engaging look at an infamous incident in American and Virginian history. I thoroughly enjoyed the accounts from the participants in their own words taken from actual trial transcripts. A fascinating snapshot into Depression-era jurisprudence. While much has been written about Northern rum-runners and gangsters, this is the story of the good ol' boys and girls who supplied the bath tub gin to the likes of Capone and his cronies. A chronicle of the first "Cornbread Mafia".

Grimms' Fairy Tales
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr Childrens Books (June, 1987)
Authors: Peter Carter, Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, and Peter Richardson
Average review score:

An Old Family Favorite
I remember having these Fairy Tales read to me at bedtime when I was little. I bought the same book to read to my son. The stories are bit anachronistic and may not meet modern standards of being politically correct, but we love them anyway.

Guide to the Plants of Granite Outcrops
Published in Hardcover by University of Georgia Press (January, 2000)
Authors: William H. Murdy and M. Eloise Brown Carter
Average review score:

Great botanical resource
A great book useful to the general public on these unique and beautiful natural communities. Photographs are excellent for identification. I would like more descriptive information, but a great starting place for anyone who would like to learn more about these often abused and under-appreciated areas. Anyone who surveys for endangered and threatened species in the southeastern U.S. should have one.

The History of Ovation Guitar
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (July, 1996)
Author: Walter Carter
Average review score:

Good Guitars
I am a fan of Ovation guitars, I already own two and will buy more. The History of the Ovation guitar is fascinating in itself as well as the great history behind it. Charley Kaman's accomplishments are impressive in the aviation industry, but are a renaissance for the guitar world.

Ovation dares to color outside the lines and the results are fantastic. History happens. Here is the story of a revolutionary instrument that had its beginning the 1960's.

Even if you are only interested in music, this book is enlightening in an unique area. The authors inclusion of his interviews with Kaman family members in his work is like sitting in on a story telling. You get a feel for the events as they take place. Particularly those of us who were around when the Beatles, Glen Campbell, Josh White and others rising. There are those ties that from Ovations' history that stir warm memories. In short, a good read.

I'm a Little Mouse: A Pat and Play Book
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company (March, 1991)
Authors: David Carter and Noelle Carter
Average review score:

a sweet read-and-pat book
"I have fuzzy gray fur and a long pink tail. I'm a little mouse. Are you a mouse too?"

Little mouse asks this question of a bear, a fish, a snake, a turtle, and finally of her mother, who replies, "Of course I'm a mouse, I'm just like you. You're my little mouse and I love you."

Our son loves the kiss he gets at the end of this book, and so do we.
